Severe Floods Hit Parts of Central Java

N/A • 3 January 2023 02:07

Heavy rains trigger flooding in many locations on the island of Java, the most densely populated island in Indonesia, including in Pekalongan and Pati in Central Java.

Heavy rains in the last few days caused the water holding capacity of the dam which collects water from the Meduri River in Pekalongan Regency, exceeded capacity and collapsed in one part, inundated several villages.

As of today, the villages have been submerged for three days, with water levels varying, from 70 centimeters up.

Residents are still staying in dry locations even though the floods are starting to recede, because they are worried that another flood will come, because of the potential for extreme weather that has been predicted by the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

While TNI personnel together with volunteers and residents are working to repair the broken dam wall, expected to be completed today, hope the water can recede due to flooding.

Another district in Central Java, the water level continues to rise due to the flood, and residents are starting to evacuate their belongings.

School was dismissed on the first school day of the year due to flooding/ triggered by heavy rains.

The water level has exceeded one meter in many locations in Pati, even at some flood points, the water has reached one point five meters.
