Dozens of Shiite Muslims in Indian-controlled Kashmir have been arrested by police after they attempted to participate in processions marking the Muslim month of Muharram. Police fired tear gas as hundreds of Muslims chanting religious and pro-freedom slogans marched in the city of Srinagar in the traditional procession. Authorities erected steel barricades and barbed wire to block the crowds and a local reporter says police used batons to beat journalists covering the event.
