During her visit in Taiwan on Wednesday, United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, she and other members of congress will not abandon their commitment to the self-governing island.

Pelosi's trip has heightened US-China tensions more than visits by other members of congress, because of her high-level position as leader of the house of representatives. She is the first speaker of the house to come to Taiwan in 25 years, since Newt Gingrich in 19-97.

Thanking Pelosi for her decades of support for Taiwan, President Tsai ing-wen presented the speaker with a civilian honor, the order of the propitious cloud.Pelosi noted that support for Taiwan is bipartisan in congress, and praised the island's democracy.

Meanwhile in China, Beijing residents on Wednesday appeared understanding of its government's response following pelosi's visit to Taiwan though many on social media expressed frustration,

Many users of the twitter-like weibo expressed disappointment that pelosi's visit seemed have taken place too easily. Days before pelosi made clear its schedule of taiwan visit China repeatedly warned that it would react with resolute and strong measures, if she insisted on going ahead with the visit.Former editor-in-chief hu Xijin of the state-owned newspaper, global time, even suggested that china could forcibly dispel pelosi's plane.

In the meantime, the U.S house speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan was hailed by many people in the island. One of them says that, pelosi is like a her, as she still chose the camp with democracy and freedom, although there was a great pressure from China.

Pelosi's visit has ratcheted up tension between china and the united states, because China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, and it views visits by foreign government officials, as recognition of the island’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, in retaliation to United States house speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, China on Wednesday is conducting military maneuvers in its mainland near the island.According to Xinhua New, the army planned to conduct live-fire drills from august 4 to august 7, across multiple locations. Previously, Pelosi's visit to Taiwan late Tuesday was greeted by the island's foreign minister, marking the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit the self-ruled island claimed by China.
