Singapore's 2016 Rio Olympic swimming gold medallist, Joseph Schooling, has been punished,  after admitting to marijuana use while he was on leave from military service,  to train for the Southeast Asian Games earlier this year.

According to Singapore's ministry of defense, Schooling used cannabis while overseas in May, when he was allowed a short-term break from his mandatory military service, so he could train for The Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam.

Schooling was given a warning must undergo regular drug tests for six months and will no longer be eligible for leave to compete or train, while finishing his two-year army obligation.

At the Rio Olympic games in 2016, schooling upset Michael Phelps for the men's 100-meter butterfly gold, in what was the American star's last individual race of his Olympic career.
