Lionel Messi has led Argentina to 2022 World Cup glory as they beat France in a penalty shootout after a dramatic 3-3 draw over 120 minutes in Sunday's final.

Argentina dominated for the opening 80 minutes at the Lusail iconic stadium and were cruising to victory as Messi fired his side ahead from the penalty spot and Angel Di Maria doubled their lead on 36th minute.

But they looked to have thrown the trophy away when Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the last 10 minutes to take the tie into extra time.

Messi restored their lead before Mbappe stunned Albiceleste again from the penalty spot scoring the first hat-trick in a world cup final since 1966. It was his 8th goal in Qatar as he beat Messi on 7 to the golden boot.

The 2022 world champion was decided in a penalty shootout. Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni failed to execute from the spot and gave Argentines their first world cup trophy in 36 years after win 4-2.
