Batam Tourism Visits and Economic Growth

Since the easing of quarantine rules for tourism international visitors have begun flood Batam in Indonesia's Riau islands after a prolonged tourism slump due to the pandemic.

Statistics Indonesia recorded 16,761 foreign tourists visiting Batam City during may. The number had increased by 105,68 percent from the previous month with a total 8.149 visits in april. However when we compared to May 2021 foreign tourist visiting in May 2022 had increased by 6,741 percent.

The tourists visiting throughout May mainly entered the city through Nongsa Pura Port harborbay ferry port and Hang Nadim International Airport. It was a result of the government’s improved handling of the pandemic as well as increasing public awareness of the government’s vaccination program.

Singaporeans take the highest share of tourists from January to May at 49,82 percent from January to May, Batam welcomed 13,189 tourists visits from Singapore.

The second position was taken by Malaysian tourists with 3,728 visits or 14,08 percent of total foreign arrivals in the same period. The third place was taken by Indian nationals with 2,107 visits or 7,96 percent and the fourth by Chinese tourists with 583 visits or 2,20 percent.

Other visitors came from the Philippines with 1,38 percent, Australia with 1,28 percent, US with 1,17 percent,UK with 1,09 percent, Japan with 0,56 percent, and Germany with 0,49 percent. The made-up 80,03 percent of the total foreign tourist visits from January to May 2022.

The increasing of international tourists in batam is barometer for the recovery the economic sector, and the biggests contributor for Riau islands.
