The actual procedure of amputating a leg hasn't changed much in the century and a half since the U.S. Civil War when so many soldiers suffered amputations (per National Museum of Civil War Medicine). But after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, a new amputation method was developed. Combined with more sophisticated artificial limbs, it could allow amputees to one day use their brains to control their prostheses.
