Vietnam's Legislative Office approved Vo Van Thuong as the country's new president during the national assembly in Hanoi on Thursday. He will serve the office until 2026.

Before the presidency, Thuong worked for the communist party as the head of central propaganda since 2016. Two months prior, former president Nguyen Xuan Phuc stepped down before Thuong was appointed.

While Prime Minister, Phuc requested retirement after he took responsibility for his subordinate officials that were involved in several high-profile corruption cases.

According to the Vietnamese constitution the president is a largely ceremonial head of state which represents the country in domestic and international affairs.
