Endangered Sumatran Tiger Spotted in Rural Village, BBKSDA Tracks Its Movements

Pekanbaru: The Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) is tracking an endangered Sumatran tiger after reports of its presence in Sungai Danai Village emerged.
 
According to local residents, a Sumatran tiger had entered the village and attacked their livestock on Friday, July 24, 2026. In response to the reports, the Riau BBKSDA promptly deployed its Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) team to inspect the area and carry out mitigation efforts.
 
Riau BBKSDA Head Supartono said the team found fresh Sumatran tiger tracks at the site, with paw prints measuring 14 centimeters in length and 13 centimeters in width.
 
“To track the animal’s movements, we have installed camera traps and are using flying drones to monitor the surrounding areas,” he said.
 
Supartono added that the team would implement several preventive measures, including educating residents, keeping livestock in enclosed areas, and using simple noise-making devices to deter the animal.
 
Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) Satyawan Pudyatmoko highlighted the Sumatran tiger’s status as a protected species under Indonesian law, urging the public to immediately report any sightings to BBKSDA officers or local authorities.
 
“We must work together to preserve wildlife while ensuring the safety of our communities,” he said.
