Prabowo Vows to Resolve Indonesia’s Waste Management Issues by 2027  

Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto has vowed to resolve Indonesia’s waste management issues by 2027, citing the effort as a crucial step in addressing climate change and global warming.
 
“Within the next year or two, we will bring about drastic change. By the end of 2027, Indonesia’s waste problem will be resolved. There will be no more heaps of garbage,” he said during an event marking the launch of 62,000 subsidized homes in Batang, Central Java, as reported by Antara on Thursday, July 30, 2026.
 
Prabowo highlighted increasingly erratic weather as a sign of worsening environmental conditions, calling for a more proactive and collaborative approach to protecting the environment. He added that through coordinated efforts between ministries, local governments, and the public, Indonesia would be able to achieve meaningful progress within a short timeframe.
 
Prabowo also described resolving the waste crisis as an integral part of the country’s broader sustainable development agenda. Beyond strengthening food and energy security, the government is committed to improving environmental quality and transforming Indonesia into a healthier and more livable nation.
 
To encourage waste management efforts, Prabowo announced plans for a nationwide “cleanest city” competition. Unlike previous initiatives that centered on symbolic awards, the government is prepared to reward top-performing cities with additional budget incentives.
 
“We will launch a cleanest city competition. If possible, we will award each of the top five cities IDR 20 billion, the following five cities IDR 10 billion, and so on,” he said.
