Makassar:  Police in Indonesia’s Selayar Islands have secured 25.44 kilograms of suspected cocaine discovered by fishermen and residents at several coastal locations, prompting a wider investigation into suspected maritime drug trafficking routes.

Selayar Police Chief Didid Imawan said officers had secured the evidence and conducted initial questioning of witnesses who discovered the packages along the shoreline in the district.

“The evidence has been secured and will be processed according to procedures for further examination,” Imawan said in a written statement received in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi Province, on Sunday, as quoted from Antara, Monday March 16, 2026.

The latest discovery occurred along the western coastline of Bontosinde in Batangmata Village, Bontomate Subdistrict, on Friday evening when residents reported a suspicious package containing white powder believed to be cocaine.

The one-kilogram package, wrapped in black plastic labeled “Bugatti,” was first spotted by a resident identified as Nuka while walking from his home in Boneria hamlet toward the nearby shoreline around 7 p.m. local time.

Nuka noticed a pile of trash along the beach and inspected it, eventually finding the suspicious package containing a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine.

After bringing the package home, the resident reported the discovery around 9 p.m. to local community police officer Brigadier Andi Nuryadin, who forwarded the information to the Bontomate police chief and Selayar police narcotics unit.

Acting on the report, Selayar police officers led by Didid and narcotics unit chief Suhardiman visited the witness and later conducted a sweep of the initial discovery site along the coastline.

Police secured one package of suspected cocaine weighing about one kilogram and transported it to Selayar police headquarters for further investigation and forensic examination.

Imawan said the latest discovery adds to a series of similar findings across several Selayar coastal areas in recent days.

Fishermen and residents previously discovered 25 additional packages suspected to contain cocaine, bringing the total weight of suspected narcotics found in the region to about 25.44 kilograms.

Authorities have secured all evidence and are coordinating with South Sulawesi provincial police and Indonesian military units to investigate the case and track potential trafficking networks.

Further investigation will be handled by provincial police together with the Hasanuddin regional military command to determine whether the drugs entered Indonesian waters through maritime smuggling routes.

Police have urged local officers and community policing units to work with residents to monitor Selayar’s coastline and immediately report any suspicious packages suspected to contain narcotics.

Authorities said residents who help locate and report suspected drug packages may receive recognition as appreciation for assisting law enforcement in combating narcotics smuggling.
