United States Hands Over Assault Amphibious Vehicles to Indonesian Marine Corps

Jakarta: The United States observed the handover of Assault Amphibious Vehicles (AAVs) today to the Indonesian Marine Corps (KORMAR) during a Welcoming Ceremony at the 6th Infantry Battalion Headquarters parade field in Cilandak, Jakarta, marking a significant milestone in the U.S.-Indonesia defense partnership.  

U.S. Embassy Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Aqueelah T. Johnson joined Indonesian Minister of Defense Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, Chief of Indonesian Military (TNI) General Agus Subiyanto, and several senior Indonesian Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff for the ceremony celebrating the successful delivery of the equipment and the strong security cooperation between the United States and Indonesia. 

“Indonesia’s procurement of Assault Amphibious Vehicles demonstrates our shared commitment to promote security and readiness across the Indo-Pacific through modernized equipment,” said Acting DCM Aqueelah T. Johnson, quoted from the U.S Embassy, Tuesday September 29, 2026.

“I am proud to see our continued partnership strengthen regional security with combat proven U.S. platforms,” Johnson added.

The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) procured 35 AAVs in this first initial batch, valued at more than USD23 million, representing Indonesia’s first significant Foreign Military Sale purchase from the United States in years. 

The first 12 vehicles arrived on September 22, comprising 11 AAVP7 personnel carrier variants and 1 AAVC7 command variant.  Both the Indonesian Marine Corps and the U.S. Marine Corps recognize the battle-tested performance of this generation of AAVs, which will provide TNI-AL new and enhanced capability to project power from sea to shore.  

Indonesia plans to acquire 70 additional AAVs to strengthen operational capabilities across the archipelago.  

The United States looks forward to Indonesia’s continued partnership as it considers opportunities to further strengthen the capabilities of the Indonesian Marine Corps.
