Highlands Papua Flash Floods Kill 23, BNPB Confirms Rising Death Toll

Highlands Papua: Flash floods and landslides occurred in Nduga Regency and Central Mamberamo Regency, Highlands Papua Province, on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at around 5:00 PM WIT. The disaster, triggered by heavy rain, resulted in dozens of deaths.

"Several residents passing through the Papan River were swept away by the current. To date, 23 residents have died," said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, in a written statement on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.

Abdul revealed that the damage caused by the flash floods and landslides included public facilities and road access. In addition, several homes were destroyed or swept away by the flood.

"As of today, 17 victims have been found," he explained.

Abdul explained that teams in the field are still searching for missing victims and clearing flood and landslide debris from residential areas. In addition, the joint team also reopened access roads that had been cut off.


Disaster Victim Management

Abduk explained that on Monday, November 17, 2025, a team from the Directorate of Victim and Refugee Management Facilities (FPKP), Deputy for Emergency Management at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), was present to conduct a series of emergency response support activities. The first activity involved inspecting the Ilekma Emergency Post in Nduga Regency, located in Jayawijaya Regency.

"There, a public kitchen has been operating, while data collection on evacuees and damage assessments is still ongoing.

The team also held a coordination meeting with the Regional Secretary and relevant regional officials to expedite the fulfillment of evacuees' basic needs. Urgent needs include food, refugee tents, clothing, blankets, and kitchen equipment.

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has distributed logistical assistance to support emergency response in Nduga Regency, including 200 basic food packages, 200 blankets, 200 tarps, 20 4x4 meter family tents, and 4 chainsaws. BNPB is also conducting outreach regarding potential rainfall.

"The public is also advised to self-evacuate if the water level around the river rises," explained Abdul.

BNPB has also handed over logistical assistance to the Nduga Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) and the local government. Furthermore, BNPB is also distributing emergency assistance in Central Mamberamo Regency, including 200 basic food packages (rice), 200 blankets, 200 mattresses, 50 tarps, 2 refugee tents, and 2 trail bikes.
