Jakarta: Estonian Ambassador to Singapore, Indonesia, and ASEAN, Veikko Kala, stated that his country is offering cooperation in developing green shipping and smart port technology to Indonesia amidst the transformation of the global maritime sector.

This statement was made at the Estonia Maritime Delegation Business Forum at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, Jakarta, on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.

According to Veikko, Estonia and Indonesia both have a long history as maritime nations, but the current challenges in the shipping industry demand faster and more efficient innovation.

"Estonia may be a small country, but that makes us an effective partner. We combine a fully digital business environment with a compact maritime ecosystem that allows new solutions to be tested and implemented quickly," said Veikko.

He explained that Estonia sees great potential for cooperation with Indonesia in the transition to green shipping.

Estonia is actively developing green shipping corridors and retrofit capabilities. We see clear opportunities for collaboration, particularly in decarbonization technologies and port energy solutions," said Veikko.

Veikko believes that the need to reduce emissions in the global shipping sector opens the door to a strategic partnership between the two countries.

In addition to green technology, Estonia also offers digital capabilities that have long been a key strength, from cybersecurity to data-driven operating systems.

"We are now applying these digital capabilities to the maritime sector, including smart ports, situational awareness, and autonomous solutions," Veikko explained.

He believes Estonia's digital expertise can be combined with Indonesia's maritime capacity to create a more modern shipping and maritime logistics system.

At the forum, Estonia brought the Estonian Maritime Cluster, along with eight companies operating in port technology, maritime engineering, robotics, and digital solutions.

Veikko said the presence of the business delegation demonstrates that the cooperative relationship between the two countries is now moving towards more concrete projects and activities.

"We are proud that slowly but surely, collaboration between our two countries is deepening, and we can undertake more joint activities," Veikko concluded.
