Indonesia Secures WTO Support to Challenge EU’s Biodiesel Duties

Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto revealed that the World Trade Organization (WTO) has sided with Indonesia in its ongoing biodiesel dispute with the European Union.

“The good news is that the WTO panel has supported Indonesia in its decision regarding the imposition of dumping duties on biodiesel in Europe,” Airlangga told reporters in Jakarta, as quoted on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

The dispute concerns the European Union’s imposition of countervailing duties on imports of Indonesian biodiesel, ranging from 8 to 18 percent.

As previously reported, in August 2023 Indonesia initiated consultations with the WTO and established a dispute settlement panel, which was officially formed in November 2023.

With the WTO panel’s ruling in favor of Indonesia, Airlangga expressed hope that the EU would lift its countervailing duties on Indonesian biodiesel.

“As a consequence of the WTO panel’s decision, the EU should remove the duties. Indonesia is now waiting to see how the EU responds to this ruling. This is certainly good news for one of Indonesia’s key export commodities,” Airlangga concluded.
