Lumajang: Mount Semeru erupted again on the dawn of Monday, July 6, 2026, sending an eruption column up to 1 kilometer above its summit.
“The eruption occurred at 5.13 a.m. WIB, with an eruption column reaching 4,676 meters above sea level,” said Yadi Yuliandi, an officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, as reported by Antara.
According to Yuliandi, the ash column was gray and thick, drifting northward. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 mm and a duration of 167 seconds.
Mount Semeru remains at Alert Level III. The public has been advised to avoid the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the summit.
The public has also been advised to maintain a distance of at least 500 meters from the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan, where pyroclastic flows, lava avalanches, and lahars could travel as far as 17 kilometers from the summit. Residents near Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat have also been advised to remain vigilant.
The Lumajang Government also warned of the risk of secondary volcanic explosions in lahar flow zones and mining areas. Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati emphasized, “never assume that volcanic material is completely safe. It may still be hot and, under certain conditions, pose a danger to the public.”
She added that rainfall could heighten the risks around Semeru’s summit and slopes.
“We urge the public to pay close attention to information regarding eruptions and pyroclastic flows, and also to understand the risks posed by residual volcanic material remaining along river channels and in mining areas,” Amperawati remarked.
