Jakarta: A total of 260 Indonesian students and lecturers have won prestigious Erasmus+ scholarships for the 2025 academic year, funded by the European Union.
These scholarship recipients will join other students from around the world to study and participate in short-term student and lecturer exchanges at various European universities.
Of these, 73 are Erasmus Mundus Joint Master's (EMJM) scholarship recipients, placing Indonesia in eighth place among the world's largest recipients of EMJM scholarships.
These students will undertake this program for up to two years in two or more European Union member countries, studying a variety of academic fields. In addition to the EMJM, 187 students and lecturers received short-term Erasmus+ exchange scholarships to study, teach, or undertake training at European universities.
Conversely, 75 European students and lecturers also came to Indonesia to study and teach under the same scholarships. Since its launch in 2004, nearly 3,000 Indonesian students and lecturers have received Erasmus+ scholarships.
"Higher education and research are among the EU's cooperation priorities within the Global Gateway Strategy to drive infrastructure investment and strengthen ties with partner countries,” said Counselor/Head of Cooperation, European Union Delegation to Indonesia, Thibaut Portevin.
"I congratulate all the students who received these scholarships. Through the Erasmus+ Programme, we are proud to invest in Indonesia's future. These scholarship recipients are future leaders who will help realize a greener, more inclusive, and more digitalized world, while strengthening ties and collaboration between Europe and Indonesia,” added Portevin.
"This programme provides students with the opportunity to study and live at various universities in EU member states. These scholarships are a unique experience that enhances knowledge, hones skills, and expands international networks."
Dr. Yulita Priyoningsih, Sub-Coordinator for Recognition of Prior Learning and International Learning, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, stated, "The support from the European Union and the Erasmus+ Programme strengthens cross-people links between Indonesia and Europe to foster internationalization and increase academic mobility in our higher education landscape."
Representing her fellow scholarship recipients, Noer Risky Ramadhani expressed her enthusiasm for her studies in Europe, saying, "We will soon embark on a once-in-a-lifetime experience across countries, cultures, and disciplines. As we step into a new academic and cultural environment, let us carry our identity as Indonesian students with pride. Let us bring the warmth, respect, and spirit of Indonesia into every classroom and every conversation. We aim not only to achieve academically but also to build intercultural bonds, collective understanding, and return as agents of change for our communities and countries."
This year's Erasmus+ Scholarship Pre-Departure Event brought together Erasmus+ scholarship recipients, Erasmus alumni, and representatives from the European Union and EU Member States.
At the event, Erasmus Mundus Student and Alumni Association (EMA) Indonesia, the official organization of Erasmus+ alumni in Indonesia, provided an introductory session about EMA Indonesia and shared experiences with new scholarship recipients to better prepare them for starting their Erasmus+ study program.
