Istanbul: Foreign Minister Sugiono underscored the need to elevate economic cooperation between Indonesia and Turkey during a courtesy call on Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul on Saturday, January 10, 2026.

According to Antara, Sugiono said the visit, which he made alongside Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, also served to convey the outcomes of the Indonesia–Turkey 2+2 Dialogue held in Ankara a day earlier. Strengthening economic ties was a key focus of the discussions.

“Regarding bilateral relations, we see the need to further enhance economic cooperation to a higher level,” Sugiono said after the meeting with President Erdogan.

During the meeting, Sugiono relayed President Erdogan’s request for Indonesia’s support in accelerating the ratification and implementation of a limited preferential trade agreement between the two countries.

“Essentially, this agreement will open up opportunities for both countries to maximize their respective economic potential,” Sugiono said.

The talks also explored prospects for expanded cooperation across several sectors, including manufacturing, halal products, and agriculture.

Sugiono conveyed greetings from President Prabowo Subianto to President Erdogan, along with a message encouraging Turkish partners to strengthen joint efforts in advancing bilateral relations.

Beyond bilateral issues, Sugiono briefed President Erdogan on recent developments in Gaza, particularly Indonesia’s position regarding participation in the International Stabilization Force (ISF) aimed at maintaining peace amid ongoing Israeli aggression.

The courtesy call was attended by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Defense Minister Yasar Guler.

The Istanbul visit followed the Indonesia–Turkey 2+2 Dialogue in Ankara, where foreign and defense ministers from both countries discussed ways to deepen strategic cooperation in security, trade, economic development, and energy.
