Jakarta: Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day celebration has made history with a grand new tradition. For the first time ever, the Kirab Bendera Pusaka, the parade carrying the sacred Red and White Flag, featured 145 horses as part of the procession.
The Kirab Bendera Pusaka is an annual tradition held on Independence Day. But for this milestone 80th anniversary, the parade was designed to be more majestic and deeply symbolic.
The presence of hundreds of horses not only enhanced the grandeur of the event but also symbolized strength, unity, and the richness of Indonesia’s cultural identity.
The horses were ridden by flag bearers and honor guards accompanying the journey of the sacred flag from the National Monument (Monas) to the State Palace. The parade drew thousands of spectators who lined the route to witness the historic moment.
According to the organizing committee, the decision to feature horses was deliberate, as they have long been a symbol of the resilience and courage of the nation’s heroes.
At the same time, the use of horses evoked Indonesia’s historical struggles, when mounted warriors played an important role in past battles.
The inclusion of 145 horses in this year’s flag parade marks a new chapter in the history of Indonesia’s Independence Day celebrations. It is hoped that the tradition will become a new icon, enriching future state ceremonies.
