Jakarta: The Indonesian men’s volleyball team etched their name into Asian volleyball history, as they secured their maiden title at the 2026 AVC Men’s Volleyball Cup.

The Garuda overcame a formidable South Korean side with a commanding 3-0 victory at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, India, on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

Match Highlights

South Korea began the bout in dominating fashion, racing to an early 6-1 lead, and maintaining control for the majority of the set. But Indonesia would hold their nerve, as they clawed back from a 22-24 deficit to force a deuce at 24-24. What ensued was an intense back-and-forth exchange, sealed by a decisive ace from Boy Arnez Arabi to close the opening set at 34-32.

Indonesia carried their winning ways into the second set, driven by outstanding performances from Alfin Daniel Pratama, Fauzan Nibras, and Farhan Halim. They would cruise to a comfortable 25-16 win.

South Korea appeared to catch a second wind heading into the third set, with the two sides ferociously trading points at 10-10, 15-15, and 20-20. But Indonesia’s composure at the net, anchored by Hendra Kurniawan and Raden Ahmad Gumilar, prevailed as the Garuda sealed the championship title with a score of 25-23.

The Garuda’s Road to the Glory

Indonesia’s road to glory was nothing short of pure drama. Despite early doubts following an embarrassing 0-3 defeat to South Korea in their Group B opener, the Merah Putih steadily improved as they marched their way towards the championship.

The achievement capped a remarkable job done by Cuban caretaker coach Reidel Alfonso Gonzales Toiran, who stepped in as an interim replacement to the absent Sergio Veloso.

Disciplined play from key figures such as libero Muhammad Reyhan, alongside crucial contributions from substitutes like Doni Hariono, added depth and dynamism to Indonesia’s play, shaping what proved to be the tournament’s victorious team.

The victory marks a new dawn in Asian men’s volleyball, with Indonesia establishing itself as a formidable force in the East.
