Rafale Purchase Considered a Move to Being Independent from a Single Weapons Supplier
Kautsar Widya Prabowo • 18 May 2026 15:03
Jakarta: The government, through the Ministry of Defense, has purchased 42 Rafale fighter jets from Dassault Aviation France, following the third phase of the purchase contract for the remaining 18 units.
Military observer Chappy Hakim believes this move is an effort to break free from dependence on a single weapons supplier.
"From my perspective, choosing the Rafale is one of our efforts to avoid dependence on a single source of defense equipment," Chappy said, as quoted by Metro TV, Monday, May 18, 2026.
He said that Indonesia has had unpleasant experiences with dependence on a single defense equipment donor country. Indonesia was once in a difficult position when the United States imposed a military embargo several decades ago.
As a result of the embargo, the Indonesian Air Force's combat readiness declined sharply due to difficulties obtaining spare parts. According to him, this bitter experience triggered a repositioning of its defense strategy to diversify its defense equipment.
"From that experience, we realized that we really can't or shouldn't rely on just one source. So we have to diversify and seek other sources," said the former Air Force Chief of Staff (KSAU).
Previously, President Prabowo Subianto officially handed over several advanced primary weapons systems (alutsista) to the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) during operations at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, East Jakarta. This addition to the air force's strength includes six Rafale MRCA fighter jets, six Falcon 8X aircraft, two A400M MRTT transport aircraft, and the GCI GM403 radar weapons system.
This delivery is part of the national defense equipment modernization program initiated by Prabowo during his time as Minister of Defense.
The Rafale fighter jets provide significant improvements in air-to-air and air-to-ground combat capabilities, particularly with the support of long-range Meteor missiles and Hammer precision ammunition, thereby strengthening national deterrence.
Meanwhile, the Falcon 8X offers flexibility to support strategic mobility, command and control missions, and surveillance. While the A400M MRTT is a key element in enhancing strategic transport and air-to-air refueling capabilities, enabling long-range air operations with greater range and duration.
Furthermore, the GCI GM403 radar serves as the eyes and ears for early detection of airborne threats and for directing fighter jets toward targets violating national sovereignty.
The Head of State emphasized that the arrival of this latest generation of defense equipment represents a crucial milestone in the modernization of national air defense. This step was taken not to incite tensions with other countries, but purely as a bulwark to protect the nation's sovereignty.
"I think one of the cornerstones of increasing our strength must be to continue to improve our defense strength, as a deterrent. We have no other interest than protecting our own territory," Prabowo explained, as quoted in Metro TV's Breaking News broadcast on Monday, May 18, 2026.
