Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an immediate investigation into a fatal collision between an intercity express and a commuter train in West Java, where at least 15 people were killed.
The President visited survivors on Tuesday morning at the Dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Regional Hospital in Bekasi, where dozens remain hospitalized following Monday night’s disaster at Bekasi Timur Station.
"We will immediately carry out an investigation into what exactly happened," President Prabowo said in a statement broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat.
He emphasized that the probe aims to determine the exact cause of the collision between the Argo Bromo Anggrek service and the KRL Commuter Line.
The death toll has now risen to 15, with 84 others injured and receiving treatment across multiple facilities.
During his visit to the hospital’s surgery clinic and recovery wards, the President interacted with patients and offered moral support to bereaved families.
The President stated that the government must determine the exact cause of the incident and instructed health officials to ensure all survivors receive optimal medical care until they are fully recovered.
Beyond the immediate cause of the crash, the President signaled a broader crackdown on railway safety standards.
He specifically highlighted the danger posed by the country's numerous unguarded rail crossings and pledged swift government action to secure the industrial foundation of the nation's transport network.
The collision has caused significant disruptions to the Jakarta metropolitan transit network.
State railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) confirmed that while some tracks have reopened, services at Bekasi Timur remain limited.
Commuter services are currently terminating at Bekasi Station and bypassing the crash site, while emergency and information command posts have been established to assist families in identifying victims.
KAI has pledged to cover all medical and funeral expenses for those affected as the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) begins evaluating whether the incident stemmed from human error, technical failure, or signaling issues.
