Prabowo Seeks Stronger Indonesia-Russia Cooperation Through Eastern Economic Forum

Vladivostok: Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto is seeking to strengthen Indonesia-Russia cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region through the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

Prabowo made the statement during his bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) in Vladivostok on Thursday, September 3, 2026,

“For Indonesia, Russia is a very important partner. Therefore, we are proud and pleased that our bilateral relations were elevated to a strategic partnership last year,” Prabowo said, according to a live broadcast uploaded by Viory. 

He also expressed his appreciation for Indonesia’s participation as a guest of honor at the 11th EEF, following an invitation from Putin. Prabowo views the forum as a great opportunity to build bridges and strengthen connections between the two countries. 

“This forum has great potential to serve as a bridge for cooperation and connectivity in our region,” Prabowo said.

Prabowo considers stronger ties between the two countries particularly important, as both Indonesia and Russia are part of the Asia-Pacific region. 

“We are both Pacific nations, and for us as an archipelagic country, connectivity and maritime cooperation are very important,” he explained.

The 74-year-old president emphasized that Indonesia continues to seek stronger cooperation with Russia across various fields to advance the interests of both countries. 

According to Prabowo, relations between Indonesia and Russia have also continued to develop, particularly in the economic and trade sectors. He described the progress as a positive development in the bilateral relationship between the two countries. 

“For several aspects of our relations, we have continued to see progress. As Your Excellency mentioned, our economic and trade relations have improved,” said Prabowo.

Expand Cooperation 

Prabowo then reaffirmed Indonesia’s readiness to further strengthen cooperation with Russia across various fields. 

The 11th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) was held Sept. 1-4 in Vladivostok, Russia’s Far East. The forum brought together government officials, business leaders, and experts from Russia and various countries. 

This year, the EEF is themed “The Far East: Development for the Benefit of People,” focusing on the development of Russia’s Far East for the well-being of its people.

The forum’s agenda includes more than 70 sessions covering a range of issues, including investment, international cooperation, technology, logistics, and infrastructure development.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yuri Trutnev said more than 5,000 people from over 70 countries had registered to attend the forum.

The EEF is one of Russia’s major economic forums, focusing on the development of the Far East while strengthening economic and investment cooperation with other countries.
