Jakarta: The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that no Indonesian citizens have been affected by the extreme heatwave in Europe.
“We have coordinated with our representatives there. No Indonesian victims have been reported,” said Heni Hamidah, Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens.
She added that her office will continue to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens abroad.
“We have opened hotlines and advised Indonesian citizens in Europe to remain vigilant,” Hamidah explained.
The devastating heatwave that has gripped Europe since mid-June has pushed temperatures to record breaking highs, exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in several countries, including France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary. It has also increased the risk of wildfires, disrupting transportation and energy supplies across several regions.
French health authorities have reported more than 1,000 deaths linked to the heatwave, with the majority of the victims being elderly. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that climate change could lead to more frequent heatwaves in the future.
