Indonesia Committed to Countering Terrorism between the ASEAN Our Eyes Forum

Kuala Lumpur: Brigadier General Robert Owen Tambunan, Head of the Defense Strategy Information Center (Kapusinfostrahan) of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense, led the Indonesian delegation at the 9th ASEAN Our Eyes (AOE) Working Group meeting in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Tuesday (July 15, 2025).

In his opening remarks, Brigadier General Tambunan expressed his appreciation for the warm hospitality of the host nation and the importance of regional collaboration in addressing the evolving threat of terrorism, including the use of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) in extremist propaganda and cyberattacks.

The 9th AOE meeting served as a platform to strengthen the exchange of strategic information among ASEAN member states, including Timor-Leste, to anticipate cross-border threats.

The forum's agenda included updates on terrorism issues, improving the coordination system for the exchange of strategic information among ASEAN countries within the AOE framework, and expert presentations on the role of women in counterterrorism strategy, the threat of Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTFs), and fears of terrorism.

The Head of the Center for Strategic and Strategic Defense (Pusinfostrahan) emphasized that the

“ASEAN Our Eyes collaboration is now increasingly vital as a symbol of collective resilience and regional solidarity,” said Tambunan, quoted from Ministry of Defense website, Friday 18 July 2025.

He also introduced the Indonesian delegation, consisting of representatives from the Ministry of Defense, the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs, and the Indonesian Air Attaché in Malaysia.

“We optimis that the discussions would strengthen regional commitments and commend Malaysia for its successful organization. We hoped that the forum's outcomes would pave the way for broader cooperation in the future,” said Brigadier Jenderal Tambunan.
