Indonesia Confident Board of Peace Will Not Sideline UN Role on Gaza

Jakarta: Foreign Minister Sugiono said Indonesia is confident that the Board of Peace initiated by United States President Donald Trump will not sideline or replace the role of the United Nations (UN) in Gaza’s recovery and peace-building efforts.

“Will it replace the United Nations? I do not think so,” Sugiono said while speaking in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland, on Friday local time, as quoted from Antara, Saturday 24 January 2026.

He stressed that the Board of Peace would not supersede the UN’s mandate or assume its responsibilities in restoring peace and stability in Gaza.

According to Sugiono, the Board of Peace is an international initiative formed by like-minded countries seeking to contribute to peace and stability in Gaza amid the ongoing conflict.

Indonesia, he said, views its participation in the board as consistent with its long-standing support for the Palestinian cause.

“Indonesia is a country that aspires to peace and global stability, particularly in addressing the situation in Palestine. Since the Board of Peace was established to pursue that objective, we believe it is important to take part,” the minister said.

Sugiono noted that Indonesia conducted intensive consultations with the Group of New York countries prior to joining the Board of Peace. He added that several Arab and Muslim-majority countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey, have also agreed to participate.

He described the Board of Peace as a concrete step toward advancing peace in Palestine, particularly in Gaza, after years of stalled diplomatic efforts.

The minister expressed hope that the board’s work would remain focused on achieving Palestinian independence and advancing a two-state solution, with all member states committed to those goals.

Indonesia formally joined the Board of Peace after President Prabowo Subianto signed the organization’s charter on the sidelines of the 2026 World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday, January 22.

President Prabowo has described the Board of Peace as a historic opportunity to pursue lasting peace in Gaza and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to contributing to efforts aimed at improving conditions for the Palestinian people.
