Jakarta: United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Francesca Albanese, expressed hope that Indonesia would maintain the consistent stance in supporting the Palestinian struggle.
She assessed that Indonesia has a long-standing track record of advocating for the Palestinian issues, including through the Non-Aligned Movement and its joint role with Malaysia in the region.
“To my knowledge, historically, Indonesia has been one of the countries that, not only as part of the Non-Aligned Movement but also alongside Malaysia in this region, has consistently upheld and led a principled position on Palestine, in line with the aspirations of the majority of Indonesians,” Albanese said during a press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 21, 2026.
Albanese said Indonesia’s position reflected its long-standing support for the Palestinian cause. She expressed hope that Indonesia would maintain this principle in responding to developments in the Palestinian territories.
“I hope that this stance remains the same and continues,” Albanese added.
Albanese also highlighted the state of multilateralism and the implementation of international law in the Palestinian conflict.
She thinks that the international order based on law was increasingly under threat as countries ceased to use international law as a guiding principle.
“We are moving from the rule of law to lawlessness,” Albanese said, warning that civilians who should be protected were instead becoming targets in conflicts.
Albanese emphasized the importance of upholding international law in addressing the situation. She referred to the International Court of Justice (ICJ)’s advisory opinion, which stated that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is in violation of international law.
According to Albanese, the necessary steps include the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the dismantling of settlements, an end to the exploitation of Palestinian resources, and compensation for the damaged causes ever since 1967
She also brings up about criminal proceedings against Israeli leaders and the alleged genocide case currently being heard by the ICJ.
Albanese emphasized that countries must ensure their political decisions on Palestine remain in line with international law.
Since October 2023, Israel has carried out a genocide in Gaza, killing more than 74,000 Palestinians and injuring over 175,000 others, while destroying around 90% of the civilian infrastructure in that territory.
