Indonesia to Bolster Protection for Ojol Drivers Through New Regulation

Jakarta: The government is drafting a presidential regulation that would classify app-based motorcycle taxi (ojol) drivers as micro-enterprise operators, in a move aimed at strengthening protections within the app-based transportation ecosystem.
 
State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said the proposal reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring adequate protections for ojol drivers, including their income, workers’ rights, and long-term job security.
 
He added that the government is also considering the sustainability of app-based transportation companies, noting that their performance directly affects the livelihoods of ojol drivers.
 
Prasetyo urged the public to remain patient as the government continues to refine the regulation.
 
“We want to ensure that the regulation can effectively govern the sector and protect those working in it,” he said.
 
Beyond the planned regulation, the government has also implemented various policies to support ojol drivers, including the reduction of application service fees to eight percent.
