Jakarta: The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported a devastating forest and land fire disaster in South Kalimantan on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
“The forest and land fires occurred in two villages in Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan Province," said Abdul Muhari, Head of the BNPB Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center, in an official statement on Sunday, June 21, 2026.
Abdul remarked that the fires scorched a total of 5.3 hectares of land across Simpang Lima Village in Cintapuri Darussalam District, and Pesayangan Village in Martapura District.
“(Of the total affected area) two hectares (were burned) in Simpang Lima Village, and 3.3 hectares in Pesayangan Village,” he said.
The Banjar Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), along with joint response teams, were deployed to extinguish the fires. The fire in Simpang Lima Village has since been extinguished. “However, efforts in Pesayangan Village are still ongoing,” Abdul added.
In light of the incident, Abdul urged residents to not burn trash on dry land, and to manage their household waste more responsibly. He also warned against burning to clear land, explaining that the flames may spread to surrounding land.
He concluded by noting that “The local government must regularly conduct outreach to prevent fires.”
