Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartanto considers the development Gold Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) is capable to strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global gold investment.

The instrument is also considered as opening up opportunities for Indonesia to increase competitiveness amid global economic uncertainty.

Airlangga said that the government continues to urge the ecosystem of national gold investment, including through Gold ETF which has been launched by the Financial Services Authority (OJK).

“So Gold ETF also becomes a fundamental thing that is launched by OJK. And of course we hope that gold, we start from upstream to downstream, actually strong,” said Airlangga when attending the General Meeting of Members of The Indonesian Issuer Association 2026 in Jakarta, as reported by Antara, Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

Airlangga emphasized the importance of developing the industrial ecosystem and gold investment on an ongoing basis. According to him, the strengthening of that sector must be done from upstream to downstream.

Upstream sector includes the industry of gold mining, while the downstream sector includes the utilization of gold by the public, both as a jewelry and long-term investment instrument.

The government hopes the strengthening of all industry chains is capable to urge the development of gold sector in a sustainable manner as well as increasing the potential of domestic investment.

Pegadaian’s Gold Ownership Reaches 153 Ton

Airlangga revealed the development of gold ownership after the government launched bullion or gold bank. At the beginning of the launching, Pegadaian managed around 70 ton of gold. That amount has now increased to around 153 ton gold.

According to Airlangga, that gold holdings are worth around USD20 billion. The figure reflects a significant potential for gold investment development.

“The 153 tons of gold is worth around USD20 billion. Meanwhile, the ETF in India is just worth USD17 billion until USD18 billion. So it is our potential to beat various countries, including Singapore, which previously was ahead. Now with the presence of bullion bank, they are a thing of the past,” stated Airlangga.

Strengthening The Competitiveness

Airlangga compares the value of Indonesia’s gold holding with Gold ETF in India, which is mentioned in a range of USD 17billion until USD18 billion.

According to him, that condition shows the opportunity of Indonesia to strengthen competitiveness in gold investment sector. He also mentioned that Indonesia had surpassed Singapore after the gold bank existed.

That strengthening of gold ecosystem is expected to be able to boost the role of Indonesia within industry whilst also regional gold investment.

Airlangga says that gold still has appeal as an investment instrument, particularly amid rising economic uncertainty. Gold is considered to have a function as a safe haven.

“So it is a great thing that is done by Indonesia, especially in this uncertain situation, gold is always be a safe haven rather than an investment,”said Airlangga.

He adds that the public also understands more about the utilization of gold as an investment instrument, one of them is through service from Pegadaian.

The development of Gold ETF and the strengthening of gold industry from upstream to downstream are one of parts of the government's efforts to improve the potential of national gold investment.
