Jakarta: Mount Marapi in Agam and Tanah Datar Regencies, West Sumatra, erupted on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 3:52 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB). As of now, Mount Merapi remains on Alert status, or Level II.
"This level indicates increased activity above normal limits, as observed through visual and/or instrumental symptoms such as increased seismic activity and the emergence of volcanic events," said Abdul Muhari, Head of the Disaster Data, Information, and Communication Center of the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), in an official statement on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.
Based on instrument readings released by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG), the eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.4 millimeters and a duration of approximately 1 minute and 11 seconds.
A report from the Marapi Volcano Observation Post stated that volcanic ash was distributed northeastward, with some observed falling in the Batu Palano area of ??Agam Regency.
"This morning at 8:45 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB), conditions in the Batu Palano area were monitored as conducive after the Agam Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPDB) team surveyed the affected area. Fog still covered the crater peak, and the ashfall continued to subside. Roads in community areas were still covered in ash of varying thickness," he explained.
Although the ashfall had begun to subside, volcanic ash that fell onto the roads could be carried by the wind and re-emerge if vehicles passed by. The Agam Regency BPBD team at the scene advised the public not to leave their homes unless absolutely necessary.
"The public was also given masks to prevent and reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections (ARI) if ashfall occurs after volcanic activity," he said.
