Jakarta: The fighting between Thailand and Cambodia has become deeply disappointing and could shake the stability of ASEAN. The Indonesian government has also spoken out about this crisis.
"Indonesia is closely following developments on the Thai-Cambodian border," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, as quoted from the official X account, Friday, July 25, 2025.
"We are confident that as neighbouring countries, both countries will return to peaceful means to resolve their differences, in line with the principles implemented in the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation," the statement added.
"The Government of the Republic of Indonesia also continues to ensure the safety and well-being of Indonesian citizens living in the affected areas," the Ministry said.
The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh urges Indonesian citizens in Cambodia to remain calm, despite the current tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. Indonesian citizens are asked to remain vigilant.
"The Indonesian Embassy also instructed Indonesian citizens to avoid or limit travel to affected areas," the appeal added.
The Indonesian Embassy also asked Indonesian citizens to follow developments from official sources, including Cambodian authorities, trusted media, and the official media of the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, issued an appeal to Indonesian citizens to pay attention to security conditions amid tensions with Cambodia.
The Indonesian Embassy urged Indonesian citizens in Thailand, particularly in the provinces of Surin, Buri Ram, Si Sa Ket, Sa Kaeo, Trat, and Ubon Ratchathani, to closely monitor security developments from official sources and follow local government instructions. According to data from the Self-Reporting Agency (Lapor Diri), there are currently 15 Indonesian citizens spread across the Thailand-Cambodia border, namely Trat, Sa Kaeo, and Ubon Ratchathani.
Clashes between the Thai and Cambodian militaries broke out again on the border between the two countries on Thursday, July 24, 2025, marking a serious escalation of the decades-long border peace. Both sides accused each other of instigating the latest cross-border attack, which resulted in resulting in civilian casualties and the displacement of thousands of citizens.
