Malaysian National Faces Death Penalty After Being Caught Smuggling Drugs Worth IDR2.79 Billion

Jakarta: The Juanda International Airport Security Task Force has foiled two drug smuggling attempts, including one involving a Malaysian national who was found carrying narcotics worth an estimated IDR2.79 billion.
 
The Juanda Customs Enforcement and Investigation (P2) team had been tipped off about a Batik Air passenger on the Kuala Lumpur-Surabaya route suspected of carrying narcotics on Monday, August 3, 2026.
 
Upon searching the Malaysian passenger, identified by the initials DI, officers discovered four packages of crystal methamphetamine weighing 990 grams and four packages containing 1,089 ecstasy pills concealed using a body wrap.
 
In a separate case, authorities intercepted a cargo shipment bound for Ternate, North Maluku, on Sunday, August 2, 2026, and found two plastic bags containing 188 grams of crystal methamphetamine worth an estimated IDR300 million.
 
The suspects have since been handed over to the Sidoarjo Police for legal proceedings under Law No. 35 of 2009 on Narcotics. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in jail, life imprisonment, or the death penalty.
