Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto has emphasized that Indonesia and Australia play a significant role in maintaining peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region following the signing of a Mutual Security Treaty between the two countries.
The remarks were delivered during a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at the State Palace on Friday, February 6, 2026.
President Prabowo noted that Indonesia and Australia share a long-standing and friendly relationship, recalling Australia’s support for Indonesia’s struggle for independence following its proclamation in 1945.
“Through the signing of the Mutual Security Treaty, this agreement reflects the determination of both countries to continue working closely to safeguard each other’s national security and to make a meaningful contribution to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,” Prabowo said.
He added that for Indonesia, the treaty underscores a firm commitment to the principles of good neighborliness and an independent and active foreign policy.
“Indonesia and Australia are destined to live side by side, and we choose to build this relationship on the basis of mutual trust and good faith,” he said.
The president stressed that Indonesia seeks friendship with all nations and has no desire to view any country as an adversary. In this context, he expressed confidence that the agreement will serve as a key pillar for regional stability and enhanced cooperation between the two neighbors.
