Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto has instructed the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to develop technologies for predicting and mitigating extreme weather amid the early arrival of El Niño.
“Today, we met with the President to discuss the issue of extreme weather. We will determine the appropriate steps to take moving forward,” BRIN Head Arif Satria said at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
El Niño could trigger a prolonged dry season in Indonesia, threatening water supplies and agricultural productivity.
In anticipation of its arrival, BRIN has been tasked with helping the government prepare for the impacts of changing climate conditions, including through the development of water resilience technologies.
“Such technologies would enable us to secure alternative water sources,” Arif said.
He added that BRIN would receive further instructions from the President upon completion of a risk assessment conducted jointly with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
