Jakarta: Member states of the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) have nominated Indonesia as the sole candidate for President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in 2026, a move welcomed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang expressed appreciation for the nomination, describing it as a strong vote of confidence from countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

“Indonesia expresses its gratitude and appreciation for the trust of Asia-Pacific Group member countries in nominating Indonesia as the sole candidate for President of the UN Human Rights Council in 2026,” Yvonne said on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

She said the nomination reflects regional support for Indonesia’s role and leadership in advancing the global human rights agenda, including its track record as a bridge builder on sensitive human rights issues.

Yvonne added that Indonesia’s position as an independent developing country, not aligned with any major power bloc, along with its consistent commitment to humanitarian causes, has strengthened confidence in its leadership.

Indonesia is currently serving as a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the 2024–2026 term. In line with the regional rotation mechanism, the Asia-Pacific Group is scheduled to hold the UNHRC presidency for its 20th cycle in 2026.

The election of the UNHRC president is set to take place on January 8, 2026, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the council’s establishment.

The milestone is expected to provide momentum for strengthening international human rights governance that is more inclusive, constructive, and focused on dialogue and cooperation.

The Indonesian government has pledged to carry out the mandate professionally, transparently, and in the spirit of multilateralism, with the aim of advancing and protecting human rights globally.

If confirmed, the presidency will be held by Indonesia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, who will chair UNHRC sessions and processes throughout 2026.

“In this capacity, Indonesia will lead the council in an objective, inclusive, and balanced manner,” the Foreign Ministry said.
