BYD Launches Rp11 Trillion EV Plant in Subang, Boosting Indonesia’s Global Supply Chain Role

Jakarta: Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita officially inaugurated Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD's new production facility in Subang's Smartpolitan Industrial Estate on Thursday, September 3, 2026. 

The major Rp11 trillion investment is hoped to bolster Indonesia's position in the global EV supply chain.

Spanning 126 hectares, the facility stands as the third-largest production plant in Indonesia. Minister Agus praised the choice of West Java as the location, noting the province's economic growth reached 5.73 percent year-on-year, outpacing the national average.

In his remarks, Agus highlighted the positive performance of the national manufacturing sector. According to second-quarter 2026 data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS), non-oil and gas processing industries grew by 5.32 percent, outpacing the national economic growth rate of 5.29 percent.

"Manufacturing growth outpaced national economic growth, which stood at 5.29 percent. The last time manufacturing growth exceeded national economic growth was 14 years ago," Agus said on Metro TV's Zona Bisnis program on Friday, September 4, 2026.

The Industry Minister added that key economic indicators, such as the manufacturing sector's contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), export performance, and investment realization, continue to show steady, strong momentum. 

BYD's presence in Subang is expected to not only expand national production capacity, but also generate job opportunities and drive Indonesia's eco-friendly vehicle ecosystem forward.
