Jakarta: More than 1,100 employees have been laid off as a result of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise bribery case involving Head of Blu-ray Cargo Group, John Field.

In his defense statement on Monday, Field expressed shock over the turn of events. The legal repercussions of the case have affected employees of his company, which had supported around 1,300 workers and their families.

John Field claims that the alleged bribe – which lies at the heart of the case – was not made of his own volition, but rather under the coercion of several customs officials.

Concluding his defense, Field urged the court to allow him the opportunity for rehabilitation.

He has been found guilty of bribing officials at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise. Prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) are seeking a three-year prison sentence.
