Jakarta: Indonesia and Qatar have moved to deepen defense ties and address rising global security concerns during high-level military talks in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin hosted Qatari Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani for a closed-door bilateral meeting.

Quoted from Antara, Tuesday, June 2, 2026 the discussions focused on expanding joint military cooperation and navigating current international geopolitical tensions.

The defense talks follow a highly anticipated meeting on Monday at the Merdeka Palace, where Sheikh Saoud met with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto to deliver a personal message from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.

According to Indonesia's Presidential Secretariat, the leaders reviewed the implementation of a sweeping bilateral memorandum of understanding signed in Doha in April 2025.

That agreement laid the groundwork for enhanced defense procurement, joint training, and strategic intelligence sharing between the two nations.

"The president welcomed the message and the attention conveyed by the Emir of Qatar and reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to continuing to strengthen bilateral relations," the Presidential Secretariat said in an official release, describing the talks as an ongoing effort to build a "mutually beneficial strategic partnership" aimed at regional stability.
