Electricity Still Uses Diesel, Solar Power Plant could be Become the Substitute

Gilimanuk: The Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia said as much as 12,6 gigawatt (GW) of electricity in Indonesia still uses diesel, so that the government is accelerating the 100 GWp Solar Power Plant.

“The total of electricity in Indonesia is there are still 12,6W that uses diesel,” said Bahlil at the Launching and Groundbreaking Program PLTS 100 GWp event that was embodied in Gilimanuk, Bali, as reported by Antara, Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Bahlil explained that to produce 12,6 GW electricity by diesel, it is needed 230-250 thousands barrels per day. Therefore, the government is accelerating the PLTS 100 GWp Program to reduce diesel consumption that is utilized as a power plant.

“If we can do this, so the reduction in our fuel import, especially diesel, will decrease and all of them will use national energy,” said Bahlil.

Diesel Fuel Efficiency
Particularly for Bali, Bahlil continued, by using PLTS with 1GW capacity, so that PLN (state-owned electricity company) can realize diesel consumption efficiency as much as 0,5-0,6 KL.

“So, no wonder if next we do it in Bali, Sir. Because the campaign is green energy,” said Bahlil.

President Prabowo officially launched the PLTS 100 GWp strategic program at Monumen Operasi Gilimanuk, Jembrana, Bali.

The offline launching in Gilimanuk, Bali, was connected by online with three other locations, such as PLTS Terapung Gajah Mungkur (Wonogiri, Central Java), PLTS Desa Sembur (Batam, Riau Islands), and PLTS Pulau Rengit (Bangka Belitung).

PLTS and BESS Monumen Operasi Gilimanuk are parts of the Fat Burning Bali Program, replacing fossil fuel power stations with solar energy.

As for the capacity of PLTS in Bali as much as 300 MWp, BESS capacity is 1.000MWh, with land requirement totalling approximately 321 hectares. The project is targeted to be operated in 2028.
