Jakarta: Arrmanatha Christiawan Nasir has officially become the 19th Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.

On Thursday, October 1, 2026, President Prabowo Subianto officially inaugurated Arrmanatha—affectionately known as “Pak Tata”—as Foreign Minister, succeeding Sugiono. Sugiono, in turn, assumed the role of Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, replacing Pratikno.

Arrmanatha is a career diplomat with extensive experience in the field of diplomacy.

Born in Bangkok, Thailand, on December 30, 1971, he pursued his undergraduate studies in Economics at the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom.

Tata later earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Leicester and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Indonesia.

He joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1997 and subsequently held various positions dealing with economic issues, trade, and multilateral relations.

During his assignment at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN in Geneva (2001–2005), Tata served as an Indonesian negotiator in World Trade Organization (WTO) talks. From 2005 to 2008, he served as Deputy Director for Agriculture and Commodities at the Directorate General for Multilateral Affairs.

Navigating Multilateral Diplomacy

Tata’s career continued at the Permanent Mission of Indonesia in New York. From 2008 to 2012, he handled economic and development issues within the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). During that period, Tata also participated in negotiations on behalf of the G77 and China regarding several UN resolutions.

From 2010 to 2011, he served as an advisor to the President of the 65th Session of the UN General Assembly, focusing on economic issues and the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).

This experience placed Tata at the heart of multilateral negotiations, particularly those on the economy, development, and cooperation among developing nations.

Five Years as the Face of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Following various diplomatic assignments, Tata served as the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2014 to 2019.

In this role, Tata was a key figure in communicating Indonesia’s foreign policy and positions to the public and the media.

After completing his tenure as spokesperson, Tata was appointed as the Indonesian Ambassador to France, Andorra, and Monaco, as well as to UNESCO, in 2019.

He held this post until 2021. That same year, the French government awarded him the title of Commandeur de la Légion d’Honneur in recognition of his contributions to Indonesia-France relations.

From Paris to UN Headquarters

In 2021, Tata returned to multilateral diplomacy when he was appointed Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations in New York and to the International Seabed Authority.

This assignment lasted until 2024, once again placing him at the center of Indonesia’s multilateral diplomatic agenda.

Tata’s experiences in Geneva, New York, and Paris—as well as at UN headquarters—shaped his career path before he returned to Jakarta to assume a vice-ministerial position.

Supporting Prabowo’s Diplomacy

On October 21, 2024, President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated Tata as one of the three Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs in the Red and White Cabinet. He served alongside Muhammad Anis Matta and Arif Havas Oegroseno.

During his tenure as Deputy Foreign Minister, Tata remained active in Indonesia’s various bilateral and multilateral diplomatic agendas.
