Jakarta: Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono will attend the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Indonesia’s official representative.
“I will be accompanied by the Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Ahmad Muzani,” he added at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport, Jakarta, on Monday, July 6, 2026.
The Indonesian Government had initially planned to send its Ambassador to Iran, Rolliansyah “Roy” Soemirat, as the country’s representative, citing scheduling conflicts involving several senior state officials.
“At that time, we were preparing for various state visits, and several key officials had prior commitments that prevented them from travelling,” Sugiono explained.
On July 2, 2026, however, the Iranian Government informed Indonesia that access to the funeral would be restricted to senior state officials, halting plans to send Ambassador Roy.
The Indonesian Government has subsequently coordinated with the Iranian Government to make the necessary arrangements for the funeral ceremony on July 9, 2026.
“We are still awaiting information on the timing and venue of the ceremony. From our understanding, several events will take place in addition to the funeral itself,” Sugiono remarked.
