Indonesians Safe After Earthquake Rattle Japan  

Jakarta: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the aftermath of a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that rattled Japan’s Kyushu Island on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
 
The quake was followed by a series of aftershocks, and an initial tsunami warning from authorities, which has since been lifted. Reports also indicated widespread damage to homes and public facilities across the region.
 
According to Director for the Protection of Indonesian Citizens Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heni Hamidah, all Indonesians who had been accounted for were safe.
 
The Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo has urged Indonesians in the region to remain calm, and to monitor official updates from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Explosion leaves several trapped under rubble

Retail giant Aeon said it had received reports of an explosion at its Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima. The company said customers had been evacuated and that it would continue to assess the situation.
 
According to NHK, part of the building’s second floor had collapsed following the explosion, leaving several people trapped beneath the debris.
 
Footage captured from an NHK helicopter showed sections of the mall’s exterior walls torn away, exposing what appeared to be the building’s structural frame.
 
The local fire department reported receiving numerous emergency calls after the powerful shaking.
