Yogyakarta: The appointment of Yogyakarta Deputy Governor Paku Alam X as Acting Governor of Yogyakarta was met with astoundment by residents.
Regional Secretary (Sekda) of Yogyakarta Ni Made Dwi Panti Indrayanti clarified that the appointment was part of standard government procedure.
“It is completely normal for an institution’s leader to be unable to carry out their duties –,whether due to an illness, official visit, or leave,– in which case the deputy will step in to handle their daily responsibilities. This is standard procedure in government bureaucracy,” Ni Made said on Thursday, June 25, 2026.
The appointment will ensure that there is no vacuum of authority during the governor’s absence from June 24 to July 1, 2026. It will also allow government operations, public services, and routine decision-making to continue without disruption.
Ni Made urged the public not to speculate on the matter. She assured that there was nothing unusual behind the decision.
“This decision is neither a new policy nor a political maneuver; rather, it is the implementation of governance procedures as mandated by law,” she emphasized.
Ni Made cited medical reasons for Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X’s absence.
“The Governor’s priority at the moment is simply undergoing a medical check-up,” Ni Made explained.
The government hopes to quell any public apprehensions on the matter, ensuring that the situation in Yogyakarta remains stable and under control.
