Jakarta: The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) has expanded administratively with the establishment of six new regional commands (kodam), as a move aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of territorial operations.
"We deem adjustments necessary to ensure a more effective span of control, faster coordination, and optimal responses to evolving situations across regions," Army Head of Information Service Brigadier General Donny Pramono said in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
Pramono emphasized that the expansion reflects the Army's recognition of the need to strengthen its reach across Indonesia's vast territory, characterized by diverse geographical conditions and social dynamics.
He added the initiative is expected to strengthen the Army's non-combat functions, particularly in disaster response operations.
"In other words, the establishment of the new six kodam is not merely about expanding the organizational structure, but also forms part of efforts to enhance the effectiveness of the Army's operational execution," Pramono said.
His remarks followed President Prabowo Subianto's inauguration of 204 military units, including the six new kodam, during a ceremony marking the 81st anniversary of the Indonesian National Armed Forces at its headquarters in Jakarta on Monday (Oct 5).
The new commands comprise Kodam XXV/Yohanes, Kodam XXVI/Pattimura, and Kodam XXVII/Siak in the Riau Islands, Yogyakarta, and East Nusa Tenggara, respectively.
The Army also inaugurated Kodam XXVIII/Tanjungpura in North Maluku, Kodam XXIX/Cendrawasih in Central Papua, and Kodam XXX/Wirabuana in West Nusa Tenggara.
Additionally, the Army established 30 territorial development infantry brigades, 150 territorial development infantry battalions, and three combat support battalions.
The inauguration further covered four new units under the Indonesian Navy's Marine Corps, comprising one brigade and four battalions.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Air Force expanded with 10 new units, ranging from the Quick Action Forces Division II to radar units.
