North Halmahera: Mount Dukono in North Halmahera Regency, North Maluku, erupted twice on Monday, November 2, 2026. One of the eruptions sent a column of volcanic ash about 950 meters above the summit.

Head of the Geological Agency Lana Saria said the first eruption occurred at 9:11 a.m. Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT), with the ash column reaching 950 meters above the summit, or 2,037 meters above sea level.

"The ash column from the eruption was white to gray with thick intensity and drifted toward the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 18 mm and a duration of 38.57 seconds," Lana said, as quoted by Antara.

Shortly afterward, the active volcano showed new activity. Mount Dukono erupted again at 9:53 a.m. WIT. The height of the ash column from this second eruption could not be seen because it was covered by clouds or fog.

The second eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a larger maximum amplitude of 31 mm and a duration of 44.76 seconds. Mount Dukono's activity remains at Level II, or Alert status.

The Geological Agency has advised residents living near the volcano, as well as visitors and tourists, not to carry out any activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius of the active crater.

In addition, Lana warned that eruptions with ash fall often occur from time to time, and the direction of the ash spread depends heavily on wind speed and direction.

Residents in the affected areas are therefore advised to always have masks or nose and mouth coverings on hand to protect their breathing from the dangers of volcanic ash. (Yaumil Tianri Rahmi)
