Jakarta: Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani met with Wang Huning, Chairman of China’s top political advisory body, to advance bilateral cooperation and strengthen collaboration on major regional and global issues.
The meeting took place at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday, December 3, where both leaders emphasized the importance of Indonesia and China’s contributions in multilateral forums. Puan underlined that the two countries share a common approach in revitalizing multilateralism amid climate challenges and widening global inequality.
“We appreciate China’s active role as an observer in the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly through its National People’s Congress,” Puan said, as quoted by Antara on Thursday.
She also noted that Indonesia’s DPR and China’s parliament have been consistently engaged in BRICS initiatives, including the 11th BRICS Parliamentary Forum held in Brasilia earlier this year.
“In today’s increasingly polarized world, platforms led by ASEAN and BRICS are playing a greater role in supporting a fair and equitable international order,” she said.
On bilateral matters, Puan highlighted the rapid expansion of economic ties between the two nations. China remains one of Indonesia’s largest partners in both trade and foreign investment.
In 2024, Indonesia–China trade reached USD147.8 billion, while Chinese investment totaled USD8.2 billion, making China the country’s third-biggest investor.
She added that both nations have recently formalized several agreements, including initiatives to promote the use of local currencies in trade and support joint economic and industrial development.
“I hope Indonesia and China continue to strengthen constructive cooperation that boosts economic and social welfare, and contributes to wider progress for developing nations,” Puan concluded.
