Jakarta: President Prabowo Subianto remains ready to broker dialogue to resolve the recently erupted conflict in the Middle East, Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono said.
He stressed that mediation requires willingness and approval from the warring parties.
"If the warring parties seek mediation, President is ready to serve as mediator. If not, we will leave it up to them," Sugiono told the press at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday night, March 3, as quoted from Antara, Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
He made the statement in response to Iran’s apparent reluctance to engage the United States in further talks amid the conflict, which also involves Israel.
Sugiono emphasized that Indonesia’s mediating initiative would hinge on decisions from the parties involved.
Regardless, the minister reassured that Jakarta stands ready to reconcile the parties' differences and interests, promoting stability and peace in the region.
"In principle, Indonesia aims to be in a position where it can bridge differences by offering our readiness to mediate," he remarked.
The United States and Israel launched joint attacks on Iran on February 28, striking Tehran and several strategic locations across the country. Iran immediately retaliated by firing missiles at US bases in nearby countries, including Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates.
On the same day, President Prabowo, through the Foreign Affairs Ministry, voiced his readiness to facilitate talks aimed at restoring security and easing tensions in the Middle East.
In response, Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi appreciated the president’s offer but implied his country’s skepticism about mediation leading to favorable results.
"We don’t know whether such an initiative will be impactful or not," he said, refraining from giving detailed comments on the topic.
However, he noted that Iran remains open to providing Indonesia with updates on developments in the conflict. The ambassador delivered the remarks at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, March 2.
