Indonesia Tightens Oversight of Regional Governments Amid Corruption Crackdown

Sumedang: Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said the government is strengthening oversight of regional heads as part of efforts to enhance integrity and governance within regional administrations.
 
The move comes as the Prabowo administration steps up efforts to crackdown on corruption following a series of high-profile cases involving local government officials.
 
The ministry will partner with the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP), the Ombudsman, and other ministries and government agencies to guide newly elected leaders.
 
Efforts will include post-inauguration orientations, stronger oversight systems, and continuous evaluations.
 
“Elected officials will immediately take part in a retreat to broaden their perspectives. These sessions are designed to equip them with the necessary skills and values,” Tito said in Sumedang Regency, West Java, as reported by Antara on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
 
Beyond leadership training, the government is also developing the Monitoring Center for Prevention (MCP), in collaboration with the KPK, as well as the Regional Government Information System (SIPD), to enable real time monitoring of regional financial management.
 
Tito added that his ministry would work with the KPK to establish 11 guidance clusters across various regions, involving deputy regional heads, regional government agencies (OPD), and regional legislative council (DPRD) members. The clusters will identify potential corruption risks and develop prevention action plans for their respective areas.
 
“Ultimately, it comes down to individual integrity,” Tito said.
