New York: Ambassador Umar Hadi, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Nations (UN), urged the UN Security Council to act swiftly on the attacks on the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) in Lebanon.

Three TNI members were killed and five others injured in two separate incidents on March 29 and 30, 2026. They were part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Ambassador Umar Hadi firmly stated that the attacks were not the work of Israel, which carried out its military intervention in Lebanese territory.

"Who is responsible for the creation and continuation of this zone of active hostilities? The current escalation did not arise out of thin air. It stems from repeated Israeli military attacks on Lebanese territory," said Ambassador Umar Hadi at a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in the Middle East at UN Headquarters in New York on March 31, 2026.

"Indonesia strongly condemns the Israeli attacks in southern Lebanon, which constitute a serious violation of Lebanon's security and territorial integrity," said Ambassador Umar Hadi.

Ambassador Umar added that Indonesia continues to stand in solidarity with the Government and people of Lebanon. As hostilities escalate in southern Lebanon, attacks on UNIFIL peacekeepers have also increased in recent weeks.

These repeated attacks are not mere incidents, but rather attacks aimed at destabilizing UNIFIL and impeding its ability to fulfill its mandate under Resolution 1701.

These attacks also constitute a direct threat to international peace and security and may constitute war crimes under international law. Therefore, we demand an immediate, thorough, and transparent investigation.

"Let me be clear. We demand a United Nations investigation, not excuses from Israel. We demand that the Security Council continue to monitor the progress of the investigation and promptly report its findings," Ambassador Umar Hadi emphasized.

"We demand that the perpetrators be held legally accountable, that impunity must not be the norm, and that attacks on peacekeepers must not be repeated or tolerated," Ambassador Umar added.

Indonesia also demands firm assurances from all parties involved, including Israel, to uphold their obligations under international law, to immediately cease attacks and aggressive behavior that endanger UN personnel and property, and to refrain from any actions that further escalate hostilities.

In this meeting, Indonesia emphasized that the safety and security of peacekeepers must remain and continue to be a top priority. Amid escalating hostilities, the Council and the Secretary-General must immediately implement emergency measures to ensure the full protection of UNIFIL personnel and assets.

This includes reviewing security arrangement protocols and activating contingency and evacuation plans in accordance with developments on the ground.

"We must utilize all political and diplomatic means to de-escalate this situation. The Security Council must reaffirm the fundamental principles that guarantee the safety and security of UN peacekeeping forces," Ambassador Umar Hadi stressed.
